Chibi Hime-San

Hime is Crunchyroll's mascot, who represents everything anime! Hime's use was for brand positioning. Her characteristics are she is upbeat, casual, direct, and mischievous. She takes two forms which is her normal height at 5’10 and her “chibi” form at 2’11.

The Sketches

I was asked to create a Chibi-Hime in my own style. This request was very intimidated in the beginning because I lacked in manga style art. So I faulted to my default which was to make it look…cute! To meet in the middle of this projects needs and my own style, what isn’t cuter than anime characters drawn in Chibi form?

What is “Chibi” if you may ask? Chibi (ちび or チビ) is a Japanese slang word describing something short (a thing, an animal or a person). It comes from the verb 禿びる (chibiru), which means 'to wear out and become shorter.

After initial sketches and the pitch, my chibi Hime was accepted to use for a Halloween campaign for the year.

Chibi Halloween Contest

The Halloween Campaign surrounded the idea of a Halloween Costume Contest for Hime. Fans submitted designs of her costume, we picked a winner and drew the fan’s artwork onto Hime as her new costume of the year.

Big thanks to George Sarvis in developing the Yokai characters/ Hime's friends!

UI Design

Just for concepts, I worked with a lead UI designer to see how these new Hime-sans would apply to the Crunchyroll App. The concept unfortunately did not pull through, but it was really fun seeing my Hime play into the product.
